Google X develops Smart contact lens measures glucose levels in diabetic patients for now

Theres no doubt that Google is becoming a full-fledged hardware company, but the latest Google X project is a lot different that tablets and smartphones — the company just announced that its building a "smart contact lens." However, its not meant to be a miniaturized version of Glass — its meant to help diabetes patients keep track of their glucose levels. Inside the lens is a miniaturized wireless chip and glucose monitor that will measure the glucose levels of the wearers tears.

Googles hoping that itll be a less painful and invasive way to monitor glucose levels than the typical method of pricking a finger and testing blood droplets multiple times a day. Ideally, the sensor would be able to generate a reading once per second, and Google wants it to act as an early warning device for when glucose levels start dropping — the company imagines putting a minuscule LED light in the lens that could indicate levels dropping above or below a set threshold.

Its not a new idea for co-creator Babek Parviz — back in 2009, Parviz showed Wired a connected contact lens meant to measure vital signs. And while this is new ground for Google, the idea of a connected contact lens for specifically measuring glucose levels isnt new — Microsoft and the University of Washington worked on a similar project back in 2011. Both Parviz and fellow co-founder Brian Otis were at the University of Washington and contributed to that project, as well.

Of course, this project is still a good ways off from being a reality — Google says its working with the FDA and is also looking for other partners who are "experts in bringing products like this to market." The company wants partners to use its technology to develop these lenses and also build apps to make the measurements available to users. Theres no word on when this lens might be a reality, or even if itll work as planned, but its good to see Google using its engineering prowess to try and solve a long-standing medical problem.TheVerge

download FREEFLIGHT game for nokia

FREEFLIGHT brings the fun and the emotion of flight simulation to a J2ME mobile phone, capable of 3D rendering (JSR-184). There is no peculiar target in FREEFLIGHT. Just the fun of flying in what is likely to be the most realistic sky ever brought onto the screen of your mobile. If you’re not familiar with aeronautics, four simple lessons will lead you from basic control of the aircraft up to acrobatics maneuvres. So, take the lessons or just go flying....It’s your choice!

THE AIRCRAFTS :Freeflight gives you four very different aircrafts to play with. Each one has different performance and handling, and each one has animated control surfaces. If you’re not familiar with flying and need some training, or you just want to make a calm and pleasant flight, the CESSNA C172 is the plane for you as it is one of the most popular trainers in the world. Then, you may want to try the agility of an unlimited-class aerobatic plane. If so, take a ride on the PITTS S2 SPECIAL. Or may be you need to feel the power of a thoroughbred like the P-51 MUSTANG,

which during the World War II was the king of the skies, and now its is the king of the Reno Air Races. Last, take the ride of the life on an F-16 FALCON, the world famous military jet fighter, depicted in the Thunderbirds team colors.
THE LANDSCAPE

As one of the most beautiful aspects of flying is the beauty of the landscape, FREEFLIGHT provides the most realistic landscape allowed by current mobile phone technology.
A complete airport with 2 runways and surrounding countryside, depicted with detailed photographic textures and real-time haze provide a detail that is simply stunning for a mobile phone.

AIRCRAFT DYNAMICS

One of the most challenging aspects of freeflight was to semplify the dynamics and control systems to fit a mobile phone, yet keep them enough complete and realistic to achieve the look and feel of a flight simulation. As result, flaps, rudder and gear controls are not included, but nevertheless the flight dynamics allow all the basic flying maneuvers plus the basic aerobatics figures such as barrell roll and loop.

AT T Pure at 149 and Tilt 2 for 299

HTC_AT&T Tilt 2 MobileAT&T HTC Pure Mobile
AT&T has officially announced the HTC Pure, which actually hit stores Sunday. Also announced, the Tilt 2, the Touch Pro 2 follow up to the Fuze or the original Tilt, depending on how you want to look at it. Both of the phones have (or will have, for the Tilt 2) Windows Mobile 6.5 on board from the get-go.

The Pure is available for $149.99 after contract and rebate. The Tilt Pro 2 "will be available in the coming weeks" but as per the rumours itll be around $299.99.

Powered by the nations fastest 3G network and the Windows phone platform, the HTC Tilt 2 and HTC PURE deliver an enhanced TouchFLO® 3D interface on a large vibrant touch screen that makes navigation intuitive and rich while enabling smooth access to desktop like web browsing. Both devices embody HTCs approach to put people at the center of the communications experience by providing full access to voice, text, or email in a single contact view, regardless of whether voice, text or email was used. This view can be accessed from the contact card or in the in-call screen during a phone conversation, ensuring the latest conversations are always at hand.

"As one of the first carriers to support Windows Mobile 6.5 in the U.S. and the largest distributor of Windows phones worldwide, AT&T has a long history of leadership in smartphones and Windows Mobile," said Michael Woodward, vice president, Mobile Phone Portfolio, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "Twice as many smartphone users choose AT&T over any other carrier and the HTC Tilt 2 and HTC PURE will lead our Windows phone lineup into 2010."

AT&T will support Windows Marketplace for Mobile in 2009 for access to a variety of applications on new AT&T devices, including the HTC PURE and HTC Tilt 2. Additionally, AT&T customers purchases from Windows Marketplace can be added to their monthly statements. After Microsoft delivers Windows Marketplace later this year for other versions of Windows Mobile, AT&T will make it available to customers using those versions.

Windows Mobile 6.5 received several upgrades that enhance ease-of-use, such as a touch-friendly user interface and improved browser with Flash support. Content and applications are just a fingertip away on the redesigned Start Menu and Internet Explorer Mobile will support the rich experiences that many Web pages offer for desktop computers.

"AT&T and HTC have a long history of innovation with Windows phones," said Andy Lees, senior vice president of Microsofts Mobile Communications Business. "AT&T, by bringing out the both the HTC Pure with its touch slate, and the HTC Tilt 2 with its keyboard, gives people the ability to choose a Windows phone that matches their preference."

HTC Tilt 2:
Designed for the business professional, the HTC Tilt 2 is designed with distinct style and strength while delivering the most powerful productivity experience available on a mobile phone. The HTC Tilt 2 features a high-resolution 3.6-inch widescreen WVGA display which can be easily tilted for an expanded viewing area and a large QWERTY keyboard, which is optimized for heavy email use. A quality speakerphone experience is enabled by dual speakers and dual microphones with advanced noise cancellation, and HTCs Straight Talk™ which allows for simplified conference calling and activation of the speakerphone by simply turning over the device. The HTC Tilt 2 also features a 3.2 megapixel camera.

HTC PURE:
Leveraging HTCs TouchFLO 3D experience, the all touch screen HTC PURE offers an advanced touch experience that is optimized for one-hand use, which further evolves the compact smartphone design. Incorporating a large, brilliant 3.2-inch WVGA touch screen, the HTC PURE is crafted to fit perfectly into the hand and accentuates ones sense of style. With a crisp advanced five megapixel auto-focus camera with video capture, expandable memory, gravity sensor and an ambient light sensor, the HTC PURE brings many of the most sophisticated features to a broad consumer audience looking for the professional benefits of a smartphone, without sacrificing size, looks or functionality.

"The HTC Tilt 2 and HTC PURE are not only powerhouse devices, they also provide a natural simplicity in the way we communicate with the people in our lives whether through voice, text or email," said Jason Mackenzie, vice president of HTC America. "Our desire is to put people at the center of every mobile experience, and we are pleased to work with AT&T, who shares this common vision."

Designing SMS apps for mobile Africa

As is well known, our mission is to organize the worlds information and make it universally accessible and useful. We aim to do this through technology, and in Africa, that means developing tools for the mobile phone. Africa has the world’s highest mobile growth rate. Mobile phone penetration is six times Internet penetration -- one third of the population owns a mobile phone and many more have access to one. Most of these devices only have voice and SMS capabilities, which is why we have chosen to focus our initial mobile efforts on SMS.

Today, we are releasing Google SMS in Uganda. Google SMS is a suite of mobile applications which provides access, via SMS, to information on a diverse number of topics including health and agriculture tips, news, local weather, sports, and more.

The suite also includes Google Trader, a marketplace application that helps buyers and sellers find each other. Users can find, "sell" or "buy" any type of product or service, from used cars and mobile phones to crops, livestock and jobs. Google Trader has been designed to help make markets more transparent. Many people in Africa lack access to information and markets beyond their immediate business and social networks. Google Trader allows sellers to post items for sale via SMS, and for buyers to search for such items.

Google SMS Tips is an SMS-based query-and-answer service. After you text a free-form query, Google algorithms restructure the query to identify keywords, search a database to identify relevant answers, and return the most relevant answer. SMS is a very limited medium: each SMS can be no longer than 160 characters, and, unlike the web, allows for one result to be returned in response to a query. Short or ambiguous queries are particularly challenging. For example: weve received queries as brief as "hiv". What exactly is someone asking for: symptoms? Causes? Prevention? Treatment? We not only have to discern intent in order to identify a relevant answer, but we also have to convey information back to the user within the confines of SMS. The challenge is further complicated by the fact that people must pay for each individual SMS message.

These are the sorts of technical challenges that have surfaced in developing SMS Tips, so please dont view it as a finished product. We need to greatly improve search quality and add to the content that we have in the Health and Ag focus areas. Now that Google SMS is live, were working on improving search quality and the breadth, and depth, of content. As for Tips, we will work to add more focus areas.

Clearly, were just beginning; theres still much to be done. If youre curious about what Google is doing in Africa, visit the Google Africa Blog. And heres a video about the broader effort initiated by the Grameen Foundation to introduce mobile applications to under-served communities.

Announcing the High Replication Datastore for App Engine

When App Engine launched over two years ago, we offered a Datastore that was designed for quick, strongly consistent reads. It was based on a Master/Slave replication topology, designed for fast writes while still allowing applications to see data immediately after it was written. For the past six months, as you are probably aware, we’ve been struggling with some reliability issues with the App Engine Datastore. Over the course of the past few months, we’ve made major strides in fixing these issues. However, our experience with these issues has made us rethink some of our design assumptions. As we promised you in some of our outage reports earlier this year, we wanted to give you a more fundamental solution to the problem.

Today I’m proud to announce the availability of a new Datastore configuration option, the High Replication Datastore. The High Replication Datastore provides the highest level of availability for your reads and writes, at the cost of increased latency for writes and changes in consistency guarantees in the API. The High Replication Datastore increases the number of data centers that maintain replicas of your data by using the Paxos algorithm to synchronize that data across datacenters in real time. One of the most significant benefits is that all functionality of your application will remain fully available during planned maintenance periods, as well as during most unplanned infrastructure issues. A more detailed comparison between these two options is available in our documentation.

From now on, when creating a new application, you will be able to select the Datastore configuration for your application. While the current Datastore configuration default remains Master/Slave, this may change in the future.

Datastore configuration options when creating an app.

The datastore configuration option can not be changed once an application is created, and all existing applications today are using the Master/Slave configuration. To help existing apps migrate their data to an app using the High Replication Datastore, we are providing some migration tools to assist you. First, we have introduced an option in the Admin Console that allows an application to serve in read-only mode so that the data may be reliably copied between apps. Secondly, we are providing a migration tool with the Python SDK that allows you to copy from one app to another. Directions on how to use this tool for Python and Java apps is documented here.

Now, a word on pricing: Because the amount of data replication significantly increases with the High Replication datastore, the price of this datastore configuration is different. But because we believe that this new configuration offers a significantly improved experience for some applications, we wanted to make it available to you as soon as possible, even though we haven’t finalized the pricing details. Thus, we are releasing the High Replication Datastore with introductory pricing of 3x that of the Master/Slave Datastore until the end of July 2011. After July, we expect that pricing of this feature will change. We’ll let you know more about the pricing details as soon as they are available, and remember, you are always protected when pricing changes occur by our Terms of Service. Due to the higher cost, we thus recommend the High Replication Datastore primarily for those developers building critical applications on App Engine who want the highest possible level of availability for their application.

Thank you, everyone, for all the work you’ve put into building applications on App Engine for the past two years. We’re excited to have High Replication Datastore as the first of many exciting launches in the new year, and hope you’re excited about the other things we’ve got in store for App Engine in 2011.

AdSense for Mobile optimized for high end phones

(Cross-posted on the Official Google Blog)

High-end mobile phones, like iPhone, Android-powered devices and the Palm Pre, continue to grow — Gartner estimates that global sales of smartphones will soar by 27% in 2009, to 177 million units. Naturally, as a result more and more people are browsing the web on the go.

Because these devices offer a browsing experience that is similar to desktop computers, advertising on smartphones is a natural extension for any AdWords campaign. However, its not always been easy for advertisers to reach people on smartphones. Thats why were investing in new high-end mobile advertising products such as our search ad options for high-end phones and AdSense for mobile applications. We hope to make advertising on high-end mobile devices as intuitive, effective and user-friendly as our existing AdWords tools.

Today, were excited to announce a new feature for our AdSense mobile publishers that enables them to serve text and image ads on their sites — specifically on these high-end smartphones. This helps mobile publishers earn revenue and fund more mobile-specific sites and web content.

New features like this help to nurture the smartphone ecosystem by encouraging the creation of more mobile content and by helping advertisers to grow their businesses by reaching new audiences. Our users experience is also improved, with increasingly relevant and device-optimized mobile ads that load faster and fit better on small screens.

For more info about this feature, check out the Inside AdSense Blog.

Europe launches RoboEarth Wikipedia for Robots

Let the robot race begin.

Expectations are high for RoboEarth, a new European-funded system to speed the development of human-serving robots. Scientists from five major European technical universities have gathered in the Netherlands this week for its launch and to demonstrate possible applications.

The first: the deceptively simple task of delivering a glass of milk to a patient in a mock-up hospital room.

The system is sometimes billed as a kind of Wikipedia for robots, allowing them - or their programmers - to turn to it for information. In a demonstration Wednesday at Eindhoven Technical University, RoboEarth wirelessly instructed a scrappy waste bin-sized robot called "Avi" to scan a rooms physical layout, including the location of the patients bed and the placement of a carton of milk on a table nearby.

Then the system activated a second robot, the more humanoid "Amigo," which used the map provided by Avi to locate the milk, grasp it with a pincer hand and bring it to the side of the hospital bed. That mission accomplished, he dropped it on the floor.

Fortunately, it was a test run and no milk was spilled. Amigo hasnt been programmed for crying anyway.

The hospital exercise is just the beginning. Organizers say the tasks the robots are carrying out are of a technological sophistication comparable to those performed by high-end robots in automobile factories - they just look clumsier because robots that interact with humans are not performing repetitive tasks in the controlled, sanitized and predictable surroundings of a factory.

The RoboEarth project was years in the making and received around 4 million euros ($5.4 million) in funding from the European Union for interrelated projects at technology conglomerate Royal Philips NV and universities in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

Designers of robots can add information to the system, which is then shared for free so that others dont have to reinvent the electric wheel. For example, if a robot maker wants to program a hand to grasp something, thats difficult to design. But the coding for three different ways to do it may be there for a robot to plug into on RoboEarth.

But RoboEarth is more than an encyclopedia. It has a system of networked computers that allow it to perform intensive computing tasks that smaller computers - or in this case simpler robots - may not be able to. It also allows individual robots to communicate between themselves, the so-called RoboCloud of networked computers, and the robot database.

"The future in robotics and especially cloud computing is very exciting," said Gajan Mohanaraja, of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich, which is taking part in the project.

Mohanarajah was one of the core developers of the RoboCloud, sometimes called an "online brain for robots," which was launched in March ahead of the rest of the project.

"This means we can build very lightweight and cheap robots and completely offload most of the computing to the cloud," Mohanarajah said.

He showed off a small mapping robot he has worked up with components costing only $500. It can roll along as far as its batteries will take it, registering its environment and uploading the data to the cloud. It could be considered a miniature, stripped-down version of one of Googles Street View cars.

Sascha Griffiths of The Technical University of Munich describes the technology his team has developed: digitizing human speech, then sending it to the RoboCloud for interpretation. What theyve built couldnt compete with Apples Siri, but it doesnt have to: the current demonstration is limited to understanding requests a person in a hospital bed might make.

All the programming is free to use and can be developed further by anyone who wants to participate in the project.

"We only ask that people who use RoboEarth and to gather information or make improvements send what theyve done back to the system for other people to use too," saod Heico Sandee, the program manager.

Intelligent Lockscreen App For Android Unveiled

A new kind of lockscreen app for Android was just unveiled recently. This app by the name Cover is a lockscreen app but one that is able to learn which app you use most frequently and it will place those apps on your lock screen so that you dont have to unlock your phone, search your home screen for the app before you use. Instead, if Cover notice the app you use frequently, that app is placed on the lock screen.

This means that if you suddenly start using another app more frequently, the lock screen apps will change to reflect it.

Cover automatically recognizes when you’re at home, work, or in the car and learns which apps you use most in each context. So when you’re in the car, maps are right there. At work, your calendar and documents are at your fingertips. You can set a custom ringer volume and wallpaper for each location.

Furthermore, you can peek into an app quickly from the lockscreen. Glancing at your calendar or checking for new social activity has never been easier. Launch apps effortlessly with a swipe.

Finally, do you ALT-TAB between apps on your computer? There hasnt been a way to do that your phone - until now. With Covers app drawer you can skip the extra steps and jump directly to the app you want.

Cover will only be available for Android devices and it will be on the Play Store for download once available.

Like our Facebook page and follow on Twitter to be notified immediately when cover becomes available for download.

LG G2 Upgrade Price At 403 For Some T Mobile Subscribers Others Get It At the Normal 499

Screen-Shot-2014-01-23-at-18.12.14-660x388

In the world of Phablets, Samsung is generally king, but who could pass up a deal like this one, even if it doesn’t have Samsung stamped all over it. The LG G2 has reportedly sunk to a price of $499.20 for the upgrade price if you’re a current T-Mobile subscriber, which is almost a steal since the normal cost of it is $600. Now since T-Mobile sells their handsets without contracts now, you usually don’t see many discounts if any at all, so when a deal like this pops up it’s a good idea to take it. Just to recap, that’s $100 off the regular retail price of the phone, which you can then further break down to the first initial installment payment of $0, with the rest of the payments broken up over the monthly EIP for a timeframe of 24 months. Just in case you missed that, the down payment is $0 for qualifying customers, so the monthly payments work out to be $20.80 a month on top of your normal monthly bill.

What could be better than having a $0 down payment on a killer phone? How about an even steeper discount? Since T-Mobile regularly puts up online discounts only, it isn’t a shock to see them offer even more of a discount on top of one they already offer. However it normally is available to most people who choose to shop online instead of in the stores. In the case with the G2′s new discount down to $499, some customers, (and only some) are reporting seeing that the price of the phone at checkout is actually dropping down to $403.20 instead of the original $499.20. So what’s happening is that certain customers are getting an additional $96 off the phone just for buying online. The down payment is obviously still 0$ if you’re someone who can qualify for this extra $96 bucks off, and if you have been waiting to upgrade your device until the right moment came around, we’re going to guess that this is that moment.

As with all web only discounts, it’s safe to say that when they say web-only they mean web-only. However, as a former T-Mobile retail employee, the company has been known to allow such discounts to be had in store. What I mean is that some locations can make exceptions. If you are wanting to pick one of these devices up, head over to the T-Mobile website and log in to upgrade if you’re available, or you could try your hand at going to a local store and asking if they could match this online price. The chances of that happening are probably slim to none, but it couldn’t hurt right?

Motorola told to pay Rs 60 200 compensation for faulty handset

Mobile handset manufacturer Motorola has been ordered by the district consumer forum to pay a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to a local resident for deficiency in service and unfair commercial practices.

The Thane District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum gave its ruling on a consumer complaint filed against the Gurgaon- based Motorola India Pvt Ltd. The judgement was given by Forum President Umesh Jhavalikar and member N D Kadam Saturday.

The complaint was filed by one Ramesh Shah, a resident of Vasai town in Thane district. Shah purchased a Motorola handset (Moto Ming - A1200) for Rs. 10,200 from a local dealer, Sanghavi Infocom, on April 13, 2008.

The next day Shah found the sound in the handset was feeble. He complained about the same to the dealer, who, however, insisted there was no fault in the mobile piece.

Later, a service centre of Motorola, Siddhivinayak Tele, attended to the complaint and rectified the fault.

However, Shahs woes did not end as he found more problems with the handset, which was finally replaced.

However, the new handset was also found to be faulty.

Finally, the service centre collected the handset on March 21, 2009 from Shah but never returned it.

The company could not resolve the problems which regularly cropped up in the handset, Shah said. Hence, he filed a complaint with the Forum seeking refund of the handset cost and Rs. 1 lakh towards compensation and legal expenses.

Motorola, in its submission, offered to replace the handset and wanted the Forum to dismiss the complaint.

In its order, the Forum made a reference to the same and said the replacement offer points to deficiency in service and unfair commercial practices resorted by the company.

Hence, the company needs to compensate the complainant.

The Forum asked the three respondents to pay a sum of Rs. 60,200 (Rs. 50,000 plus Rs. 10,200 handset cost) to the complainant within a period of 30 days the order.
