Google to showcase a new version of Android at I O

Tags: Google , Android

Its been confirmed that Big G will announce a new version of its Android operating system and that the latest installment will feature a nickname that starts with the letter "L."

Senior Vice President of Google, Sundar Pichai has indicated that he will preview the newest Android OS during Googles keynote tomorrow. This is a fresh move for the Mountain View company. The next major Android updated isnt expected to drop until later in the year, and this is the first time that Google has previewed its operating system so early on. Apple has made a similar move with the announcement of iOS 8, so this might be Googles way of trying to steal or match the thunder that the Cupertino-based tech company has created recently.

I/O is Googles developers conference, so expect the announcements to reveal a lot of exciting new tools for developers to use in the latest Android build. Another interesting preview tomorrow will be Android Wear, Googles take on the wearable market. Expect to see new devices, as well as manufacturing partners who will be getting in on the wearable action.

LG G3 with 5 5 QHD display laser AF camera goes official

Tags: LG , Android

The LG G3 is finally official and is ready to take the duties as the companys 2014 flagship Android smartphone.

Hardware

The LG G3 features a 5.5" True HD-IPS+ LCD display with a QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution. This results in the eye-watering (in a good sense) pixel density of 534 pixels per inch. The company states that there really is a difference when looking at the display this sharp and that the Retina display wasnt even close to the final frontier, as the Steve Jobs claimed.

Inside the phone, theres a Snapdragon 801 (MSM8975AC) chipset with a 2.5GHz quad-core Krait 400 processor and Adreno 330 GPU. The version of the G3 with 16GB of internal memory sports 2GB of RAM, while the 32GB model has 3GB of RAM. Both versions will pack microSD card slots supporting up to 128GB cards.

On the connectivity side, theres Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, NFC and an IR blaster.

LG continues the trend set by the G2 with rear-mounted volume controls and Power/Lock and has refined them a bit. On top of them is the main camera, which sports a 13MP sensor with OIS. Next to it is a dual-LED flash, while on the left LG has fitted a special laser that measures distance and speeds up autofocus. In addition the company has also implemented phase detection autofocus for ultra fast 276ms focusing.

LG G3 official photos

It seems the company has turned equal attention to the 2MP front-facing camera, which sports bigger pixels and a brighter lens than the main one. It also promises the perfect viewing angle angle for selfies, which LG says is 77 degrees.

Design

The LG G3 is made out of polycarbonate with a special layer on top that gives it a finish close to metal. Additionally, it is scratch resitant and helps keep fingerprints away. Sadly, its not self-healing as the one of the LG G Flex. It is worth noting that the G3 isnt water-proof.

While those of you expecting actual metal finish might be disappointed, going for plastic has allowed the LG G3 to keep its weight in check - the smartphone weighs just 150 grams, which is pretty decent for the size. Full measurements are 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm, which is also very compact for a 5.5" smartphone. In comparison, the Oppo Find 7 measures 152.6 x 75 x 9.2 mm while packing the same display.

Audio fans will appreciate the 1W speaker at the back of the G3, which is similar to the one found in the LG G Pro 2. However this time LG has also enabled a boost mode, which brings its power to 1.5W.

The battery of the LG G3 is 3,000mAh and is user-removable. Theres optional wireless charging support that comes with a different back panel.

height=100/ height=100/ height=100/

LG G3 official photos

Software

The LG G3 runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the completely redesigned Optimus UI skin on top with a ton of new features. It is now boasting flat design, new icons and overall streamlined feel. There are a number of new apps and key features here, too.

One of them is called Smart Notice and it is LGs attempt to compete with Google Nows convenience. To do so, the service silently collects information tidbits and tells you useful things it believes might help you in your day. For example, it tells you if its raining outside, sets location-based reminders and will even automatically erase apps that havent been used for a couple of months, if you tell it to do so. One cool feature is that it can also automatically switch Wi-Fi on when you arrive home or at the office.

The keyboard is redesigned and you can now adjust its height to your personal preference. The companys proprietary KnockCode and Knock On features are also present, as is a new Health app that keeps track of your exercise regime and counts your daily steps.

Availability

LG launches the G3 in South Korea next week, while in Europe the phone will launch in June. We got no specific time-frame for the US launch, but LG promised it will be faster than that of the G2. Pricing information is yet to be detailed

Samsung Galaxy S5 launches on NTT DoCoMo Pink color in tow

Tags: Samsung , NTT DoCoMo , Android

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has reached the land of the rising sun – the flagship went on sale on the countrys biggest carrier, NTT DoCoMo. This launch also debuts a new color, Sweet Pink, in addition to the standard Charcoal Black and Shimmering White (the Copper Gold and Electric Blue are not available though).

Anyway, the Samsung Galaxy S5 SC-04F is virtually the same as the international version, except for some country and carrier-specific additions. Those are mostly in the connectivity section with Xi LTE (150Mbps downlink), VoLTE (voice over LTE networks), FOMA, 1Seg and NOTTV (mobile TV standards).

The SC-04F also features fast and quick charging – they require dedicated chargers, but they can put 1,200mAh and 1,800mAh in the battery respectively in just an hour. The international Galaxy S5 doesn’t have this feature.

Anyway, the phone will be available tomorrow, May 15, but you can pre-order it right now from NTT DoCoMos web site.

By the way, NTT DoCoMo also launched the Sony Xperia A2 today.

HTC One Mini 2 announced with 13MP camera

Tags: HTC , Android

HTC just took the wraps off the One mini 2. The successor of the One mini has grown in size and features a much more groovy design, akin to its bigger brother, the One M8.

src=http://ift.tt/T5oV6k/

The HTC One Mini 2 features a 4.5" display of 720p resolution (326 ppi pixel density). As a result, the phone is now slightly larger than its predecessor and measures 137 x 65 x 10.6mm. You’ll notice it’s nearly 1mm thicker, too, but thanks to the altered curved design it feels just as nice in the hand. The phone weighs 137 grams and sports BoomSound dual front stereo speakers.

HTC One Mini 2 official photos

Under the hood of the HTC One mini 2 operates a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset featuring a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex A7 CPU, 1GB of RAM and an Adreno 305 GPU. The storage is 16GB – just as much as on the original One mini, but this time it can be expanded by an additional 128GB thanks to the microSD card slot.

Interestingly the HTC One mini 2 marks a departure from HTC’s UltraPixel camera tech and comes with a more conventional 13MP camera with a BSI sensor and an f/2.2 lens. Just like the 5MP camera at the front, it is capable of recording 1080p video.

height=130/ height=130/ height=130/

HTC One Mini 2 official photos

The One mini 2 offers LTE connectivity as well as GPS and GLONASS, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 (atpX enabled), dual-band Wi-Fi 802.1n and microUSB 2.0. HTC says the smartphone can last for 16 hours of 3G talk time on its 2,100 mAh battery.

src=http://ift.tt/1ls7TWq/

There’s no information on pricing at this point, but the phone will launch in EMEA and North Asia in June in Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold color options. Dont forget to check out what we think of the HTC One Mini 2 in our detailed hands-on.

Huawei Ascend P7 breaks 1 million sales mark

Tags: Huawei , Android

The 6.5mm Huawei Ascend P7 is one of the best looking and thinnest smartphones on the market, a feature that has helped the company sell some 1 million units since the devices launch.

But the Chinese company wont stop there. It has declared its hopes to sell a total of 10 million units in 12 months - an ambitious goal for a relatively minor player in western markets.

However, Huawei was able to sell 4 million units of the P7s precursor, the Ascend P6 during its lifecycle, starting in June 2013. The company has also slowly risen to third global smartphone manufacturer, behind Apple and Samsung, by selling 52 million smartphones last year.

Besides the slim waistline, the P7 offers a 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP/8MP front/rear camera combo, and 2GB of RAM to go with its home-brewed quad-core 1.8GHz Kirin 910T chipset. We were really impressed by the build quality of the P7, but not so much by its performance in our full review.

The Ascend P7 has not yet seen a release in the US (and could forego one altogether), so stateside customers will have to look at unofficial online retailers like eBay or Amazon for a P7.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini specs and photos emerge

Tags: Samsung , Android , Rumors

Thanks to some anonymous tipster a few images are now available online that show what appears to be a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini. The smartphone looks very similar to a Samsung Galaxy S5, using the same dotted back panel, a heart-rate monitor under the camera lens and even the water-repelling rubber padding underneath the back panel. There even looks to be a fingerprint scanner under the home button.

Looking at the back panel it appears to cover more of edge of the phone compared to the Galaxy S5 and the battery is smaller, which adds some credence to the info that its a mini version.

While the images can be an elaborate hoax it seems perfectly believable for Samsung to release a mini that so closely resembles the bigger version. And now that the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom has been official since last month and the Galaxy S5 Active is official since today were pretty sure this one is coming shortly.

height=126/ height=126/ height=126/

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini (click to expand)

Weve heard about it having a 4.5" display of 720p resolution along with an 8 MP camera, IP67 certification and a heart-rate monitor. Weve even seen official support pages.

The device in the images doesnt appear to have a flap cover on top of its microUSB port, which puts a question mark on the water resistance claims.

According to the source, the Galaxy S5 mini will not have a Snapdragon 400 but rather a new, yet unannounced, Exynos 3 Quad (Exynos 3470) chip with a quad-core 1.4 GHz processor with Mali-400 MP4 GPU and 1.5 GB of RAM.

This 24 carat gold plated HTC One M8 costs over 1500 pounds

Tags: HTC , Android

Ever since Apple launched the iPhone 5s, gold has become a popular color, with companies like HTC offering a gold colored variant of the HTC One M8 as standard. But there always existed companies who made gold-plated versions of existing phones, and we are talking real gold here.

One UK-based company Goldgenie has decided to give the HTC One M8 the 24-carat gold-plating treatment for those willing to part with 1500 pounds, or £1,580.83 to be exact.

If regular gold is not to your taste, you could choose the rose gold variant, which would set you back by £1,664.17, or the platinum variant, which costs £1,747.50.

In each of these cases, the cost of the phone is included. If you already have an HTC One M8 and wish to get it gold plated, you will have to shell out close to a 1000 quids.

Goldgenie also does plating for other smartphones, and you can check them out from their website below.

Apple discontinues the iPhone 4 again

Tags: Apple , iOS

Times of India brought news that Apple is resurrecting the iPhone 4 earlier this year and now it brings news of its demise. One of the three leading Apple partners in the country said that the older model helped Apple doubled the user base.

That partner and two others reported that Apple will not be providing new supplies of the old model. The iPhone 4 will reportedly be discontinued in other regions where it was still available.

Apples two budget models (the 4 and 4s rather than the 5c) helped the company reach record sales in India, China, Russia and Brazil.

The iPhone 4 served as an "ugly duckling" to make the 4s look better. Apple launched a buyback program that offered INR 7,500 back, which reduced the price gap between the iPhone 4 and 4s to just INR 3,000 ($50).

That buyback program is now over as the iPhone 4s becomes the new budget offering.

Amazon phone supposedly getting official today

Tags: Amazon , Rumors

In just a few short hours, Amazon will hold an event during which its widely believed to be presenting its first smartphone. The image below is apparently a true to life rendering of it.

This device has basically been rumored ever since the first Kindle Fire tablet became official. After all, it does seem pretty logical for Amazon to want to go into smartphones now that it has a pretty strong foothold in the tablet space.

The Amazon phone will reportedly come with a unique 3D-like interface, that wont require glasses for viewing. This will be enabled by four cameras mounted on the front corners of the handset. They will be used to track your eyes and continuously adapt the image you see based on your position in relation to the screen.

This system will make certain tilt gestures possible, and those may be used to control some aspects of Amazons built-in apps.

The OS will be similar to whats inside Amazons Kindle Fire tablets, unsurprisingly, so expect a forked version of Android in this case too.

Obviously, Amazons services are going to be front and center. And given what its done with its tablets, the retailers first smartphone may be sold at an extremely low price - at cost almost. Thats because Amazon wants to make money by selling you stuff after you buy one of its devices.

As for specs, a 4.7-inch 720p touchscreen could be in there, while a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with a quad-core CPU along with 2GB of RAM should handle the heavy lifting.

According to the latest leak on the matter, the Amazon phone will be an AT&T exclusive. Its unclear whether that will help the new device or hurt it, especially nowadays when people are used to having the best smartphones available on all carriers. Then again, this may be a limited time exclusivity deal.

Stick around and well bring you all the news regarding Amazons first smartphone as it happens.

Android and Windows Phone devices will add a kill switch

Tags: Android , Windows Phone , Apple

The New York Attorney General has signed agreements with Google and Microsoft to add "kill switches" to Android and Windows Phone devices.

It comes as part of the "Secure our Smartphones" initiative, where the report stresses the importance of kill switch safeguards for mobile phone platforms in order to keep user data safe.

The kill switch issue has been one thats been hotly discussed. For example, in California, the kill switch idea was immediately rejected, but then the state recently approved it this May. This bill states that whenever a new phone is purchased in the state of California, it must be loaded with the kill switch software.

Apple already has a kill switch feature loaded on its iPhones, and the New York City Attorney General cited that there was a 19% decrease in iPhone thefts ever since the feature was implemented; whereas Samsung phones that still didnt carry the feature experienced a 40% increase in robberies.

Now its unclear as to when the kill switches will be added to the Android and Windows Phone platforms, but when they are, every one of Google and Microsofts phones will have a kill switch.

Alleged live photo of Motorola Moto E leaks out

Tags: Nokia , Windows Phone

Alleged live photo of Motorola’s yet to be announced Moto E made the rounds online. The image showcases the previously leaked handset alongside the Moto G.

As you can see in the photo above, the Moto E looks decidedly cheaper than the already budget-conscious Moto G. The white-colored handset appears to lack front-facing camera. The chrome strip below the display on the other hand could well be a speaker slot.

A leaked sketch of the upcoming device with the tagline “Hello new Moto” also suggests that the Moto E will likely have a front speaker. See it below.

Moto E is expected to debut next week, on May 13 at an event in London with a price tag lower than that of the Moto G ($105 is rumored). Rumored specs include 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 4.3” display, 1GB of RAM, and 5MP camera.

Octa core Huawei Kirin 920 chipset goes official

Tags: Huawei , Android , Misc

Huawei announced today its next generation chipset - the Kirin 920. It is based on ARMs big.LITTLE architecture and uses four Cortex-A15 and four Cortex-A7 cores capable of working simultaneously.

The Cortex-A15 cores can be clocked from 1.7GHz up to 2.0GHz, while the energy-efficient Cortex-A7 ones start at 1.3GHz and can be boosted up to 1.6GHz.

The Kirin 920 relies on the powerful Mali-T628MP4 quad-core graphics. Weve seen the same GPU, but with six cores (MP6), to perform in the octa-core models of the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5.

Another key features of the new chipset are the LTE Category 6 support, Tensilica HIFI3 professional audio processor, 4K video recording and QHD display support.

According to Huaweis presentation the Kirin 920 outperforms the entire current crop of flagship chipsets including Snapdragon 801, Exynos 5420 and MediaTek MT6592. The company even claims its SoC can outdo the upcoming Snapdragon 805, expected to power the

The first device expected to utilize the Kirin 920 is the leaked Huawei codenamed Mulan flagship with a 1080p display, 3GB of RAM and a 13MP snapper with 4K video recording.

Its benchmark scores appeared yesterday, suggesting that there is some truth to the Huawei words. The smartphone outperformed each and every other flagship in AnTuTu, although the margin is hardly so comfortable as to suggest the Snapdragon 805 is also within reach. Then again, the Mulan is still in its beta stages so the score might improve even further.

Raon Digital Everun Si Mungil Kinerja Handal

Update makes Galaxy S5 camera even faster

Tags: Samsung , Android , Firmware update

The international Samsung Galaxy S5 is receiving a new update as we speak which promises to improve the camera startup speed, gallery responsiveness and fingerprint recognition time.

The update is currently live in the UK and is expected to roll out gradually across all devices. According to Sammobile which have the update installed on a unit the camera is now faster to open, which can also be said about the gallery (which was a tad slow prior to the update).

The source also reports the fingerprint scanner is more accurate even with one-handed use.

Finally the update is said to bring a general performance boost and improved RAM management - a common side effect of firmware updates.

The software version remains at Android 4.4.2 and the update carries the version G900FXXU1ANE2. Its currently only available through Samsungs Kies software, but you can manually download and install if you know how.

HTC One M8 Prime to have a ceramic body

Tags: HTC , Android , Rumors

HTC’s plotting to release an improved version of their One M8 smartphone, the HTC One M8 Prime, and rumor has it that it will be sporting a ceramic casing.

Although it may seem like a strange material to construct a cell phone with, apparently the ceramic that is being used for the upcoming smartphone is cheaper than aluminum, but also provides a great level of durability all while being easier to manufacture. Seems like a win-win for HTC, or any cell phone manufacturer, for that matter.

An official announcement regarding the HTC One M8 Prime should be made sometime this September, so for now, we’ll have to play the waiting game to see whether or not we’ll be sporting an Android smartphone made out of the same materials our coffee mugs are constructed with.

Other specs for the One M8 Prime included a 5.5” screen with a 2560x1440 display, a quad-core processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage with a microSD card slot, and LTE speeds that are capable of reaching 300 Mbit/s.

There has also been some talk of the One M8 Prime getting an updated camera, as HTC has received some flak for the sensor since the original One launched, and now the current One M8’s unit is receiving the same criticism.

Xiaomi beats out Apple in China ranks 3rd in country

Tags: Xiaomi , Android , Apple

Xiaomi has steadily been making big moves in China with their constant release of quality handsets at bargain prices. It looks like all of their work has paid off, as the Chinese smartphone manufacturer now commands a larger market share than Apple in the region.

It isn’t as if Xiaomi is blowing the Cupertino-based tech giant out of the water, though. Xiaomi stands at taking over 11% of the total market share, whereas Apple accounts for 10% of all smartphones sold in China.

Xiaomi’s recent success makes them the number three cell phone manufacturer in the region, putting only Samsung and Lenovo ahead, with 18% and 12% market share respectively.

The momentum that Xiaomi has built for itself in such a relatively short amount of time is impressive. It looks like their business is primed to expand even further in the near future, as they will be entering new markets in Asia: Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

If the company can continue to deliver the same Android handsets with top specs for bottom dollar, then they should enjoy an even more prosperous future.

Another LG G3 dummy photographed in the wild

Tags: LG , Android , Rumors

Mere hours before the announcement, the LG G3 has leaked yet again with more photos of a dummy unit. Weve already seen a dummy of the Korean version, but on this one the U+LTE8 logo is replaced with a more generic LTE-A logo (but it may still be a Korean version, just for another carrier).

That still doesn’t match the leaked press images weve seen that have the LG logo below the camera instead of at the bottom, near the loudspeaker. That aside the design looks just like all the other images weve seen.

To recap, the LG G3 will measure 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9mm, pack a 5.5" QHD screen, Snapdragon 801 chipset and a 13MP optically stabilized camera with laser-assisted auto-focus. Thats coming from the official LG site that jumped the gun.

More LG G3 shots

LGs event later today should fill the remaining blanks – body material, pricing the launch date. Earlier info pointed to today as the launch, meaning LG will go the Apple and HTC route and put its flagship on sale the moment its announced.

Week 23 in review Galaxy S5 LTE A and Amazon Fire Phone

Tags: Android , Samsung , Amazon , Apple , iOS , BlackBerry , Firmware Update , Google , Rumors

The Week In Review is our series meant to recap all the major announcements of the week, which you might have missed. Week 23 was rather busy with new products so you are in for a long read. Enjoy!

This week was marked by the announcement of the first ever Amazon smartphone - the Fire Phone. It is an innovative gadget, more than the 4.7" 720p IPS display, Snapdragon 800 chipset and 13 MP camera would suggest. Whats interesting about it is the phones Dynamic Perspective 3D UI which follows your eyes and the Firefly feature, which would recognize pretty much any object you snap with the camera.

This week also saw the debut of the long-rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A with a 5.1" QHD display and Snapdragon 805 chipset. Samsung later confirmed this version of the Galaxy S5 is intended only for South Korea and wont be released anywhere else in the world.

We learned that two new affordable Galaxies are coming later this year - the Galaxy Pocket 2 and Galaxy Core 2 Duos. Both phones leaked with specs, pictures and prices, so we guess they should be going official any moment now.

And while we are still talking about Samsung, the Black Edition of the Galaxy S4 mini is now being updated to the Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware worldwide.

Google managed to surprise us with another update bringing the standard-issue Android KitKat up to v. 4.4.4. It contains just a security patch for an OpenSSL bug, which would have allowed a man-in-the-middle attack. There are no new features. The update is now rolling on the compatible Nexus devices and should expand to the latest Moto gadgets soon.

Apple has also rolled out the iOS 8 beta 2 update. It brings lots of critical bug fixes, new settings and the QuickType keyboard on the iPads. It also improves the Handoff feature working between iOS 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite.

The 4.7" and the 5.5" iPhone 6 models leaked yet again. TechSmartt did an extensive hands-on video of the dummies on YouTube. The 4.7" iPhone 6 was even sized up next to an HTC One (M8).

Finally, this week we saw three new BlackBerry smartphones show their faces - BlackBerry codenamed Kopi and the officially presented BlackBerry Passport and BlackBerry Classic with hardware QWERTY keyboards. Passport and Classic are coming this fall.
