Amazon phone supposedly getting official today

Tags: Amazon , Rumors

In just a few short hours, Amazon will hold an event during which its widely believed to be presenting its first smartphone. The image below is apparently a true to life rendering of it.

This device has basically been rumored ever since the first Kindle Fire tablet became official. After all, it does seem pretty logical for Amazon to want to go into smartphones now that it has a pretty strong foothold in the tablet space.

The Amazon phone will reportedly come with a unique 3D-like interface, that wont require glasses for viewing. This will be enabled by four cameras mounted on the front corners of the handset. They will be used to track your eyes and continuously adapt the image you see based on your position in relation to the screen.

This system will make certain tilt gestures possible, and those may be used to control some aspects of Amazons built-in apps.

The OS will be similar to whats inside Amazons Kindle Fire tablets, unsurprisingly, so expect a forked version of Android in this case too.

Obviously, Amazons services are going to be front and center. And given what its done with its tablets, the retailers first smartphone may be sold at an extremely low price - at cost almost. Thats because Amazon wants to make money by selling you stuff after you buy one of its devices.

As for specs, a 4.7-inch 720p touchscreen could be in there, while a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with a quad-core CPU along with 2GB of RAM should handle the heavy lifting.

According to the latest leak on the matter, the Amazon phone will be an AT&T exclusive. Its unclear whether that will help the new device or hurt it, especially nowadays when people are used to having the best smartphones available on all carriers. Then again, this may be a limited time exclusivity deal.

Stick around and well bring you all the news regarding Amazons first smartphone as it happens.

Android and Windows Phone devices will add a kill switch

Tags: Android , Windows Phone , Apple

The New York Attorney General has signed agreements with Google and Microsoft to add "kill switches" to Android and Windows Phone devices.

It comes as part of the "Secure our Smartphones" initiative, where the report stresses the importance of kill switch safeguards for mobile phone platforms in order to keep user data safe.

The kill switch issue has been one thats been hotly discussed. For example, in California, the kill switch idea was immediately rejected, but then the state recently approved it this May. This bill states that whenever a new phone is purchased in the state of California, it must be loaded with the kill switch software.

Apple already has a kill switch feature loaded on its iPhones, and the New York City Attorney General cited that there was a 19% decrease in iPhone thefts ever since the feature was implemented; whereas Samsung phones that still didnt carry the feature experienced a 40% increase in robberies.

Now its unclear as to when the kill switches will be added to the Android and Windows Phone platforms, but when they are, every one of Google and Microsofts phones will have a kill switch.

Week 23 in review Galaxy S5 LTE A and Amazon Fire Phone

Tags: Android , Samsung , Amazon , Apple , iOS , BlackBerry , Firmware Update , Google , Rumors

The Week In Review is our series meant to recap all the major announcements of the week, which you might have missed. Week 23 was rather busy with new products so you are in for a long read. Enjoy!

This week was marked by the announcement of the first ever Amazon smartphone - the Fire Phone. It is an innovative gadget, more than the 4.7" 720p IPS display, Snapdragon 800 chipset and 13 MP camera would suggest. Whats interesting about it is the phones Dynamic Perspective 3D UI which follows your eyes and the Firefly feature, which would recognize pretty much any object you snap with the camera.

This week also saw the debut of the long-rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A with a 5.1" QHD display and Snapdragon 805 chipset. Samsung later confirmed this version of the Galaxy S5 is intended only for South Korea and wont be released anywhere else in the world.

We learned that two new affordable Galaxies are coming later this year - the Galaxy Pocket 2 and Galaxy Core 2 Duos. Both phones leaked with specs, pictures and prices, so we guess they should be going official any moment now.

And while we are still talking about Samsung, the Black Edition of the Galaxy S4 mini is now being updated to the Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware worldwide.

Google managed to surprise us with another update bringing the standard-issue Android KitKat up to v. 4.4.4. It contains just a security patch for an OpenSSL bug, which would have allowed a man-in-the-middle attack. There are no new features. The update is now rolling on the compatible Nexus devices and should expand to the latest Moto gadgets soon.

Apple has also rolled out the iOS 8 beta 2 update. It brings lots of critical bug fixes, new settings and the QuickType keyboard on the iPads. It also improves the Handoff feature working between iOS 8 and Mac OS X Yosemite.

The 4.7" and the 5.5" iPhone 6 models leaked yet again. TechSmartt did an extensive hands-on video of the dummies on YouTube. The 4.7" iPhone 6 was even sized up next to an HTC One (M8).

Finally, this week we saw three new BlackBerry smartphones show their faces - BlackBerry codenamed Kopi and the officially presented BlackBerry Passport and BlackBerry Classic with hardware QWERTY keyboards. Passport and Classic are coming this fall.

Windows Phone Tango minimum hardware limitations outlined

Offerings from both Nokia and ZTE debuted the next major build of Windows Phone last week at MWC, dubbed "Tango". The new Nokia Lumia 610 and ZTE Orbit both took to their respective stands to show off the new lower-end capabilities of Microsofts mobile OS.
Despite the latest iteration (excluding Apollo) of Windows Phone having made it to these devices on the floor at MWC, Microsoft had been particularly vague about just what the limitations were for devices employing lower-tiered hardware, until now.

Both the Lumia 610 and Orbit employ 256MB of RAM and this means that there are certain implications which consumers will need to bear in mind when choosing a Windows Phone device, these are as follows:
Windows Phone Marketplace app restrictions – Some processor-intensive apps have particular memory requirements, and won’t work on phones with 256MB of RAM.
Podcast/Video Podcast Subscriptions – Managing podcast subscriptions or watching video podcasts on a device with 256MB of RAM will not be possible.
Bing Local Scout – Bing Local Scout wont feature on a device with only 256MB of RAM.
Fast app/Task switching – The feature differs on Windows Phones with 256MB of RAM in that if a single application uses over 90MB, it will be killed on exit and thus not appear in the task switcher, besides this the functionality will remain unchanged.
SkyDrive automatic photo upload – 256MB of RAM means no auto-upload option, but users will still be able to upload their photos manually.
HD video playback – Some compressed videos will be unable to play due to a lack of codec support on devices with 256MB of RAM.
Background agents – To free up RAM for the foreground on such devices, generic background agents (PeriodicTasks/ResourceIntensiveTasks) will be disabled.
As well as informing prospective buyers of these new more competitively priced Windows Phones what theyll be missing out on, Microsoft have also made a point of appealing to Windows Phone developers who will need to take into account the limitations of devices using the new minimum hardware requirements.
Speed seems to be key with a message of optimizing app start times and reducing an apps memory footprint being pushed to developers. All this being said, Microsoft are adding features to Windows Phone 7.5 too, including a new location alert, MMS enhancements and improved SIM contact management.
Windows Phone "Tango" should be arriving on 256MB of RAM-endowed Windows Phone devices come Q2 this year.
